Goal for the Week: - Finish Act 1 - Getting to know the characters --Every character has something they want and something in their way Resources: Text Audiobook Sparknotes Version (Don't just read this) Study Guide Act 1: Introducing all the characters Scene 1: At the Duke's Palace (Video Summary) + Meet Duke Orsino + Orsino is in love with Olivia, consumed fully in the pursuit of his lady love Scene 2: At the beach (Video Summary) + Meet Viola, shipwrecked with no prospects + She has a plan to dress like a boy and work for the Duke Scene 3: At Olivia's House (Video Summary) + Meet Sir Toby, Maria and Sir Andrew + Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are party animals + There is a lot of word play here with the meeting of Maria and Sir Andrew. Mostly at Sir Andrew's expense Scene 4: at the Duke's Palace (Video Summary) + Orsino has come to deeply trust his newest servant Cesario/Viola, after 3 days + So, he sends Cesario on the most important of missions, Wooing Olivia for him + In a twist of fate, Cesario/Viola is in love with Orsino Scene 5: At Olivia's Garden (Video Summary) + Finally we get to meet Olivia, her top servant, Malvolio, and the Fool, Feste. + There is tension between Feste and Malvolio. The jokester and the uptight servant. + Olivia meets with Cesario, and promptly falls in love with "him". Characters:
Look over the character map above. Draw lines in between connected characters with their relationship. For instance: Duke Orsino -in love with-> Olivia Malvolio -works for-> Olivia There are two main focuses for characters: their Objective and Obstacle. These are the driving forces of all plays (and stories). Characters want something (their Objective) and there is something in their way (their Obstacle). Without these two forces there is no action, purpose or drama to a story. We'll use Flipgrid to have a conversation about characters Objectives and Obstacles.
